Five area students were awarded 2016-2017 Texas A&M University Scholarships at the April 21 Highland Lakes A&M Club Muster ceremony at Quail Point in Horseshoe Bay.

They were Sarah Fauline Nelson and Samantha Bailey Offutt of Marble Falls High School, James Jarrett Haydon and Mattilyn Collen Schuessler of Faith Academy and Madison Noel Hall of Burnet High School.

Todd Staples was the keynote speaker. Now president of Texas Oil and Gas, he a former Texas Commissioner of Agriculture, state senator and representative.

I'm proud that A&M promotes service to community and service to country,” he said. “Aggies don't choose to be defined by events, we choose to be defined by our actions.”

The meeting included the traditional Aggie Muster Ceremony, a candlelit memorial to Texas A&M graduates who pass on each year.

If there is an A&M man in 100 miles of you, you are expected to get together, eat a little and live over the days you spent at the A&M College of Texas,” read the March 1923 issue of Texas Aggie magazine that began the tradition.
