Final call for auditions for an Aug. 20 talent show will be held Saturday, July 23, and auditions of the opening show of the 2016-2017 theater season, "Don't Hug Me" will be held Monday and Tuesday, July 25-26, at Hill Country Community Theater, 4003 West Farm to Market Road 2147.

Saturday talent show auditions Saturday will take place from 1-3 p.m.

Singers, acoustic musicians, dancers, magicians, comedians, ventriloquists, animal trainers and entertainers of any stripe are encouraged to try out.
“I was amazed with the variety of talent that we had last year,” said Mike Rademaekers, executive director of HCCT. “This show is an opportunity for people to come and let their talents and abilities shine on our stage.”
No appointment is necessary for the open call and there is no entry fee. No bands and only acoustic musical acts will be accepted. The Aug. 20 production  will be a showcase performance only, not a competition.  Prizes will not be awarded.

"Don't Hug Me"

The auditions for five musical comedy roles will take place at 7 p.m. on both Monday and Tuesday nights.

The book and lyrics for "Don't Hug Me," described by Rademaekers as "a love story with singin' and stuff," was written by Phil Olsen, with a musical score by Paul Olsen.

It takes place in frigid Bunyan Bay, Minnesota, where the characters are the cantankerous, backwoods "Archie Bunker" bar owner, Gunner Johnson, who wants to move to Florida; his equally strong-willed wife, Clara Johnson, who wants to stay; the pretty, young waitress, Bernice Lundstrom, who dreams of a singing career and her oblivious, business owner fiance, Kanute Gunderson, wants her to stay home.

When a fast-talking salesman, Aarvod Gosselsen, promises to bring romance into their lives, through the "magic of karaoke," hallarity breaks loose.

"Don't Hug Me" will run from Sept. 15-25, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. on Sundays.
