Marble Falls opened the basketball season with a big splash Friday night, rolling to a 65-35 win over Wimberley at Max Copeland Gymnasium.

Junior post Mya McMillian opened with a 25-point effort and added at least 10 rebounds and a handful of blocked shots to lead the effort.

The Lady Mustangs opened the game with an 8-0 run sparked by the team’s energy and fast pace.

Morgan Hagood scored the first points on a layup on a break off the opening tipoff. The Lady Mustangs reeled off points on their first four times they touched the basketball, scoring on an Aspen Woerner followed shot, a McMillian short banker off the run and then another McMillian follow shot.

The Lady Mustangs were up 8-0 with 6:47 left in the first quarter and they didn’t look back.

The Lady Mustangs pushed the lead to 16-4 when McMillian scored off the break again. Se had eight of the team’s first 16 points.

Late in the first quarter, Maria Gonzalez hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to push the lead to 21-6 with just 36 seconds left in the quarter.

Marble Falls led 38-14 at halftime. At halftime McMillian had 14 points, Aubree Adams five and Trinity Boyd four points.

All 11 players scored for the Lady Mustangs, Boyd finished with 10 points, Woerner with seven and Eileen Neri and Adams with five each.

Wimberley won its district last year and returned two starters. Senior guard Yancey Gilmore finished with nine points to lead the Lady Texans, who are 1-1 on the season. They beat Yaokum in their opener on Tuesday.

“That’s what we’ve been talking about since Day One,’’ Marble Falls first-year head coach John Berkman said. “We want to come out with intensity from the get go. You can be talented and athletic, but you have to do something with it. We did a good job at the start. We have some things to work on, but we showed a lot of good things tonight.’’
