The Burnet Municipal Airport and the City of Burnet recently celebrated the completion of a multi-million dollar improvement project at Kate Craddock Field.
The event held in the Highland Lakes Squadron Commemorative Air Force hangar on Thursday, Nov. 10 also marked the 55th anniversary of the airport.
The project, which officials said cost an estimated $12 million, included an increased taxiway/runway separation with construction of a new taxiway and a runway overlay; acquisition of land for the separation and for additional protection zones at each end of the airport. Other improvements included increased apron areas, drainage study, installation of storm water collection systems, relocation of the fuel farm, new fencing, relocation of utility lines and other associated work.
Property acquisition began in 2011 and construction on the project began in early 2015. The project was completed in October of this year. Funding for the project was provided through the Texas Department of Transportation – Aviation Division, the Burnet Economic Development Corporation and the City of Burnet.
The project was part of the airport’s master plan developed in May of 2006. A committee of interested parties, including local business persons, pilots, tenants of the airport and interested residents began meeting with project planners in April 2007 to establish the key components of the plan. After eleven months of work, the proposed plan was submitted to the City Council in March 2008.
