Evelyn Margaret Carfer, born Aug. 6, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York, went to our heavenly Father on Friday, Nov. 25, 2016, at the age of 90.
Leaving New York and following her husband to Texas shortly after their nuptials, establishing her lifetime commitment and devotion as the matriarch, Evelyn was completely vested in family and community life. Vowed to her husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends, Evelyn greeted all with a smile and a helping hand. For 68 years, Evelyn was at Richard Carfer's side as they built a home together in Austin before retiring in Spicewood, Texas. As a pillar of the Spicewood Community for more than 30 years, she and her husband help build the once-small retirement housing establishment into an extensive society of mixed generations. Supporting the Spicewood Volunteer Fire Department as an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary, you could find her tirelessly assisting with their annual garage sales, making sandwiches, baked goods for bake sales and more. Evelyn’s life was all about her family. She lived for others and to bring joy. The natural ability to nurture, dote on you, and warm your soul could be found in the heart of Evelyn Carfer.
She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas E. Doyne; mother, Margaret Christie; step-mother, Madelyn Doyne; and three brothers, Thomas E. Doyne, Robert J. Doyne; and two sisters, Jeanette Baker and Shirley E. Hobbs. Evelyn is survived by her husband, Richard F. Carfer, of Spicewood, Texas; her son, William F. Carfer, also of Spicewood, Texas; and daughter, Patricia L. Zawora of San Antonio; seven adult grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress, Austin, with funeral service to begin at 10 a.m. Graveside service will be held at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas.
