Betty Janice Blazek Akins

Betty Janice Blazek Akins passed away Dec. 1, 2016. She was born April 7, 1942, the daughter of Ruthie Mae Opal Gentry and Winfred Rufus Blackburn. She graduated from Liberty High School in 1959 and moved to Houston to attend business school and to work. It was here that she met the love of her life, William Melvin Blazek Jr. They were married Sept. 23, 1961. To this union were born four children: Melvin, Louise, Betty and William. Betty worked for many years as a medical business professional. She is remembered as a loving wife, mother, daughter, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved the time she spent with her family as well as reading, travel, watching sports and playing educational games with her children and grandchildren. She was a dedicated, hard-working person and loving mother. She always made time for those she cared for and made sure they always knew how much they were loved. Following the death of her beloved husband of 35 years, William Melvin Blazek Jr., in 1997, she would later marry her second husband, Charles (C.H.) Akins, who passed away in 2009.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; brothers, Glennis Ray, Billy, Bobby, Jerry and Danny; and grandson, Willie.

She is survived by her children, Melvin Blazek and wife Laura, Louise Blazek Wiggins and husband Ron, Betty Blazek Cohn and husband Lew, William Blazek and wife Anne; sister, Linda Penley; grandchildren, Amber Blazek and wife Sommer, Wendy Wiggins, Ashley Blazek and husband Thomas Church, Justin Jimenez and partner Brent Shaw, Emeri Blazek, Madeline Cohn, Kristen Blazek, Sean Jimenez, Rachel Cohn, Brandon Jimenez and Ryan Blazek; five sisters-in-law; great-grandchildren, Joseph, Anna, Coby, Ally, Ace and Isaiah, and many nieces, nephews and friends. We are deeply grateful to the devotion shown to her by sister Linda and niece Jennifer the last few weeks.

Visitation will be held at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Frwy., Houston, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at the funeral home with graveside services to follow at the Brookside Cemetery.
