Vol Moore “Monty” Montgomery

Monty Montgomery was taken home by the “Big Boss” on November 8, 2016 at his home in Burnet, Texas. He lived a very full life enjoying hunting the brush country of south Texas, the Texas hill country, bay and offshore fishing in Port Aransas. He loved sharing his pastimes with his kids, grandkids and friends. He never met a stranger and his zest for life never wavered.

Monty was born on December 10, 1931 in Stamford, Texas and raised in over 40 small towns in north and west Texas. His father worked as an engineer building roads all over west Texas. They settled in Abilene and he graduated from Abilene High School.

Monty was a proud Aggie and graduated from Texas A&M College in 1954 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was a member of the Corps of Cadets, head Yell Leader known as “Ears” Montgomery, a member of the Singing Cadets, and basketball player for the Aggies. Monty was proud to be a 3rd generation Aggie after his father ’24 and grandfather ’89. He was commissioned by the Air Force and spent three years in Germany building an airbase in Kaufbeuren, Bavaria. In his spare time, he traveled with his mother, skied, and hunted trophies throughout Europe.

When he returned to the states, he moved to Houston and married Mary Anna Hays from Carlsbad, New Mexico. He continued the Aggie tradition by sending his three kids to Texas A&M. He served in the Air National Guard and began the first of many businesses in construction, mining and moonlighting as a taxidermist for Carter Taxidermy following his passion and talent for mounting birds. They lived in Houston, San Antonio, Llano, Austin and Burnet as he pursued many businesses as a true entrepreneur. His last venture was SabreData, Inc., founded by Monty and son Vol. He retired and lived in Burnet his last 10 years near his family. Monty was a Son of the Republic of Texas and a member of the Freemasons.

Monty is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Mary Anna Hays Montgomery. Daughter Andrea Roach ‘81, husband Joe and children Colton and Anna of Lago Vista. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, December 17 at 1pm at Reveille Peak Ranch, 105 CR 115, Burnet, Texas. The service will be in a beautiful outdoor pavilion and per Monty’s wishes, will be a casual event with his life to be celebrated with beer and barbeque, campfires and fishing.
