District unbeaten Lady Mustangs set up showdown

Marble Falls remains unbeaten in District 26-5A girls’ basketball after dominating Friday in a matchup with previously district unbeaten Boerne Champion at Max Copeland Gym.

The Lady Stangs dominated on the glass and played excellent defense to subdue Boerne Champion, 54-40. Mya McMillain scored 15 points and had 14 rebounds to lead the effort along with Aubree Adams with 10 points on the offensive end.

The defense played a key role utilizing a box-and-one scheme to saddle Champion junior guard Katlyn Ghavidel in the game.

The Lady Mustangs trio of Morgan Hagood, Trinity Boyd and Stefanie King split time guarding the Chargers big offensive weapon.

Ghavidel, who came into the game averaging 24 points, finished with a 10-point fourth quarter to raise he total to 23 against the Lady Mustangs.

The Lady Mustangs built a double-digit cushion five minutes into the game and were in control by 15 points at halftime.

Boerne Champion (13-6, 2-1) was able to make it interesting in the fourth quarter when Ghavidel hit a pair of 3-pointers on consecutive possessions. First, the guard fired away from the right wing with 3:20 left in the fourth quarter and then on the next possession ripped one from the right corner to trim the lead to 44-37.

Mustang coach John Berkman called time with 2:46 left and set up a play, but the Lady Mustangs turned the ball over. Boerne Champion drew a foul that sent Field Fatlin to the line, but she missed both free throws.

With 2:11 left in the game, Kori Sanford drew the fifth foul on McMillian sending the Lady Mustangs 6-3 post to the bench. Sanford made one free throw and the Mustangs answered with a fastbreak layin from King to push the lead back to eight. The Lady Mustangs outscored Boerne Champion, 10-3, over the final two and half minutes to seal the game.

Boyd scored five of he eight points in the final 90 seconds of the game.

The Lady Stangs will take on Kerrville Tivy in a key game on Tuesday at Max Copeland Gym. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m.

Then on Friday, Jan. 6 the Lady Mustangs are at Seguin. Seguin is tied with the Lady Mustangs at 3-0 after Tuesday’s games. Kerrville Tivy is 2-1 along with Boerne Champion.
