Stephen L. Bires

Stephen L Bires passed away on Thursday Jan. 19, 2017.

He was born on Dec. 26, 1923 in West Aliquippa, Pennsylvania to George and Anna Bires.

Stephen served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theatre.

He met his future bride, Eleanor Eakin at LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in June of 1943. They married Sept. 3, 1947 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania while he was attending Villanova University.

They had two sons; Stephen L. Jr., and Robert Mark Bires.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son; Robert Mark Bires, and brother George “Jeep” Bires.

He is survived by his loving wife; Eleanor; son Stephen L., Jr. “Larry” and wife Soontharee of Corpus Christi; brother, James and wife Joyce of Omaha, Nebraska; sister, Sister Georgine Bires of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and sister Elizabeth A. Bires of Cleveland, Ohio as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their children.

After graduation from Villanova in 1951, he was employed by Texaco in New York City.

After a brief period in corporate accounting, he left Texaco and the family moved to Dallas. While living in Dallas, Stephen worked for several accounting firms, including Lybrand, Ross Bros. and Montgomery, which later merged as Coopers and Lybrand.

He earned his certificate as a Certified Public Accountant in 1954.

He left Lybrands in 1962 and joined the Dallas headquarters of Dresser Industries.

In 1982 Stephen took early retirement and he and Eleanor moved to Hilton Head, South Carolina.

He soon tired of just playing golf returning to work part time with a regional CPA firm. During retirement he conducted finance and Continuing Education seminars for several state CPA Associations.

In July 1993, he and Eleanor moved back to Texas and settled in Horseshoe Bay. He again worked part time for a local and regional CPA firm.

In March of 1996 he was named “CPA of the Year” by the Dallas Chapter of the Texas Society.

He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and his endless source of stories and jokes, many told on himself.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the charity of your choice.

Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 2, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Clements Wilcox Funeral Home, Marble Falls.

Burial will be Friday, Feb. 3, at 11:15 a.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio.
