Library Thrift Store spotlights Strickland

Mildred and Art Strickland have lived a life of volunteerism in Marble Falls.
Mildred Strickland is being recognized by the Marble Falls Library Thrift Store as its Volunteer of the Month.
Mildred Strickland began volunteering at the Marble Falls Library Thrift Store after retiring from a teaching career of 30 years. When she began to volunteer in the early 1990s, the thrift store was located on Main at Fifth Street. Mildred continued to volunteer when the thrift store moved into the larger building previously occupied by the Marble Falls Library in 1997.
Now she also volunteers in the present location at Third Street and Avenue J, which was opened in 2007. Through the years, Mildred has worked with sorting the donations of clothes and jewelry that the thrift store receives. She treasures the friendship of the other workers and loves being able to support the Marble Falls Library.
Mildred is also an active member of the Highland Lakes Service League, Granite Hills Luncheon Club, Highland Lakes Garden Club, DAR, Delta Kappa Gamma, and Highland Lakes Retired Teachers.
When Mildred graduated from LSU in 1952, she taught business classes in Tallulah, Louisiana, which was just 25 miles from Newellton, Louisiana, where she was born. After attending Schreiner College for two years and serving as an aviator in the Marines for five years during World War II, her husband Art graduated from UT and Austin Presbyterian Seminary, and moved to Tallulah to be a minister.
Luckily Mildred attended the Presbyterian Church where Art was the new minister. They met and married in 1954. A few moves later, after she had the opportunity to get her masters and certification in Reading and Special Education from Sul Ross, she taught Special Education at Marble Falls High School for 12 years until she retired in 1994.
Her husband of 62 years, Art Strickland, has recently retired from being treasurer of the Marble Falls Lions Club for 30 years. As the pastor of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Marble Falls, he also was actively involved when the Ministerial Alliance organized The Helping Center in 1986, and has served on that board as treasurer and secretary for 30 years. He retired from the ministry in 1987.
They have three children, 6 grandchildren and 3 great granddaughters.
