Marble Falls girls basketball didn’t play well in its last game of the 2016-2017 season, but this year will be marked as the time the team lived “Our Moment.’’
A 46-28 defeat in the Region IV-5A semifinals was hard to take. The Lady Mustangs big guns weren’t hitting and the Corpus Christi Flour Bluff Hornets played aggressively from the first tip and carried the momentum from a double digit lead at halftime all the way to a regional title and a berth in this week’s Final Four.
Flour Bluff’s Meredith Marcum and Mia Schlemme combined for 10 points and provided excellent ball-handling the seal the victory.
Flour Bluff carries a 29-9 record into its state semifinal matchup with Mansfield Timberview.
Marble Falls season ends 26-11 with a solid team that parlayed a second-place team finish into four rounds deep playoff run.
“We had a lot of success this year,’’ McMillian said. “We learned to believe in us it ended for us today. But our coach and most of us we’ll be back. I’m going to play AAU again and we’ll come back even better.’’
Marble Falls had five seniors close out their career.
None played any tougher than 5-2 point guard Tiffany Dunavant.
Dunavant took the last shot of the game for the Lady Stangs from outside. It found the rim but not the net.
That was how it went for the day. The shots that usually were on target couldn’t find the net at the San Antonio Northside Gym.
McMillian scored 11 points as the only players in double figures.
Senior guard Molly Myrick finished with three points and Aubree Adams drew a blank.
They had combined for 30 points in the 63-58 comeback storm against Port Lavaca Calhoun in the regional quarterfinals.
“This team accomplished a lot,’’ first-year coach John Berkman said. “we won 26 games, we earned second in district and we snapped a 29-game losing streak in district. This team really overcame a lot. There is so much to be proud of.’’
