Meals on Wheels in Burnet County is a program of Opportunities for Williamson & Burnet Counties (OWBC).
It is a program for people over the age of 60 carried out by volunteers who served or delivered 109,018 hot meals in the two-county area in 2014 alone. Five days a week it allows seniors to live independently as long as possible and provides a human connection for those who might otherwise be isolated, without interaction or wellness checks.
During congregate meals at senior and community centers, seniors have opportunities to engage in social and educational activities, enjoying companionship with other seniors, staff and volunteers.
OWBC estimates the average cost for a senior living facility is $50,000 a year whereas, providing five hot meals a week for a year to an independent-living senior is $1,800. Also:
-
Meals account for one third of the U.S. Recommended Daily Nutrition Allowances.
-
97 percent of seniors report making better nutritional choices as a result of the program.
-
84 percent of seniors are more aware of healthier eating options.
-
93 percent report being able to stay in their homes longer because of the program.
-
94 percent feel more secure in their homes due to volunteer visits.
