MFHS grads earn more than $5 million in scholarships

At the Marble Falls High School (MFHS) Senior Scholarship Assembly Thursday night, the announcement came: Valedictorian of the Class of 2017 is Madelyn “Maddie” Maples and the Salutatorian is Meikala Hester.

The announcement by MFHS Principal Emmett Aubrey made the announcement along with the nam,e of the individual National Merit Commended Scholar, Jack Harvell-Degolier and the National Hispanic Recognition Program honoree Stefanie King.

In total, the class earned more than $5 million in scholarships. Some 250 local scholarships amounted to more than $248,475.

With the Valedictorian Medal comes a scholarship from the State of Texas for full tuition for the first year at any state-supported college or university in the state. In all, the class accumulated $1.63 million in college scholarships.

GI Bill and other military scholarships awarded by military recruiters accounted for a potential $3.2 million.

“Marble Falls is best known for its support of it schools and the young people who are educated here,” said MFHS Counselor Janna Johnson.

She said more than 250 scholarships earned by the Class of 2017 amounted to more than $248,475. Marble Falls Inependent School District (MFISD) Superintendent Chris Allen, PhD, and County Judge James Oakley distributed 65 scholarships from the growing legacy of Lemmah A. Perry Foundation, established in the estate of a former Marble Falls High School teacher. Other teachers, beloved family member memorials and funds directed through local churches and the Highland Lakes Legacy Fund made up many of the other local scholarships. Still others came from local clubs and organizations, area businesses, school clubs and professional educator organizations.

Retired Houston Oilers player Gary Cutsinger presented bouquets of roses to athletes announced by his wife Pam as winners of scholarships from the Retired National Football League (NFL) Players Association Professional Athletes Foundation, one from his own San Antonio/Austin Chapter and one from the NFL Priest Holmes Foundation.

The 24 honor graduates, the top 10 percent of their class, are guaranteed admission to state colleges and universities, Aubrey noted. They are Madison Burdett, Rachel Coursey, Georgia Eddy, Morgan Hagood, Harvell-Degolier, Hester, Elizabeth Isaack, Delaney Kelley, King, Ashley Lecates, Laurne Loader, Maples, Avery Marshall, Brittany Miller, Megan Offutt, Weston Schultz, Alexandra Steward, Haleigh Tepper, Jacqueline Vasquez, Kelsey Walker, Abigale Weber, Joyce Williams, Wolf Williams and Kameron Wright.
