Nina Francis Ruth Gaston Wood

January 24, 1933 ~ May 31, 2017

Today, we mark the passing of a great woman, Nina Francis Ruth Gaston Wood. She was born January 24, 1933, in Aspermont, Texas, in Stonewall County to William David Gaston and Ruby Laverne Beam. Some called her Mom, some called her Grandma or Mimaw, and some called her Aunt Nina, but all called her blessed, like the Bible says in Proverbs 31:28. She was a dedicated and fierce mother who raised four children on her own and was still able to help others in their time of need as well.

In the mid 1970s, she met and married Alfred “Bert” Wood. She and “Pa Bert” shared a wonderful, mostly joyous life together, enjoying each other's children, grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Later in life, dementia stole her memory, but she remained strong-willed and self-reliant until the very end. Her life story can be summed up with three words: caring, hard-working, and feisty! She passed away at 84 and left us with a lifetime of memories to hold on to and pass down to future generations.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; a daughter, Peggy Taliaferro; two sisters; two brothers; a half-brother; and a stepbrother.

She is survived by two sons, Ken Mayfield and wife Margaret and Ronald Mayfield and wife Paula; a daughter, Debby Phillips and husband James; two stepdaughters; a brother, Joe Gaston and wife Delores; six grandchildren; multiple stepgranchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, several great-stepgrandchildren and countless nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. July 15 at the Lakeside Pavilion in Marble Falls. Lunch will be provided.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Nina’s honor to Altus Hospice care at altusfoundation.com.
