Lee David (LD) Ferguson passed away Oct. 26, 2017. The oldest of eight children, L.D. was born in Fairland, Texas, on Aug. 26, 1923, in the family’s farmhouse to Samuel Riley and Clara May Tumlinson Ferguson. He attended Fairland School and Marble Falls School.
Prior to WWII, L.D. hauled gravel used to build Wirtz Dam Road and worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps clearing debris from Longhorn Caverns, building part of the pathways in the caverns and building Park Road 4, placing the boulders along the road which are still there today. Also prior to WWII, L.D. worked as a welder and shipbuilder in the Houston shipyards.
L.D. volunteered for the Army in February 1943. He served in the infantry in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was wounded in the New Guinea Campaign and awarded the Purple Heart. Following WWII, he also served in Korea during the Korean conflict. During his active duty he was stationed at Ft. Polk, Louisiana; Ft. Hood, Texas; numerous posts in Germany and at Ft. Bliss, Texas.
L.D. retired January 31, 1968, to a ranch near Little Rock, Arkansas, where he raised cows and hay. He farmed nearly 1,000 acres. He also worked full time at the VA Hospital in Little Rock. He retired from farming in 1996 and moved to Marble Falls where he and his wife of 50 years bought their Pecan Valley home.
L.D. was the director of operations of the new addition to the Marble Falls Senior Activity Center and was also treasurer. He really enjoyed the center and all his friends there. He loved living on Lake Marble Falls, where he could fish whenever he wanted to. He will be greatly missed.
L.D. is preceded in death by his wife, Leona; his parents; brothers, Vernon Harwood Ferguson, Deward Riley Ferguson, and Dewey Lyndon Ferguson; and sister Katherine Elizabeth Cox. He is survived by stepson Errol Sylvester and stepdaughter Brenda Whiteman; sister Beulah May Mills; brothers, Samuel Riley Ferguson Jr. and Larry Riley Ferguson; as well as two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; and a host of friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 11, at 1:30 p.m. at the Marble Falls Senior Activity Center, 1200 7th St., Marble Falls, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marble Falls Senior Activity Center or Harbor Hospice of Austin.
