Granite Shoals will have the opportunity to meet their candidates at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 21, in a forum sponsored by The Highlander at the fire hall, 8410 West Ranch to Market Road 1431.
Two races are up for grabs whether voters attend early voting, April 23-May 1, or return to the fire hall as their one central polling place for the May 5 General Election.
Bruce Jones will be listed on the ballot above incumbent Shirley King in the Place 2 race. Terry Scott drew first listing on the ballot above Ryan Wolters for Place 4. Will Skinner is uncontested for Place 6.
Bruce Jones for Place 2
Jones, 62, of 102 Belaire Drive, is a real estate broker who has lived in Granite Shoals a little more than two years. But he says he and his wife have coming there since 1962, introducing children and grandchildren to lake life. He is active with Special Olympics of Texas and is a past president and life-time honorary board member for the Raj Hope Foundation that supports education and recreation for children and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He is a life member of the Montgomery County Fair and Rodeo, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, a leader in a local FFA Booster Club and in the Montgomery County 4-H, where he also was a financial board director.
Shirley King for Place 2
King, 65, of 6421 West Ranch to Market Road 1431, is a businesswoman who has lived in the city more than 42 years and has served on the city council 16 years. She was a three-term alderman under the old General Law incorporation of the city beginning in 2001. Under the new Home Rule Charter, she was eligible and elected for three more terms to the new limit. Since waiting out a year, she has been elected twice more and the third term she seeks would again bring her to a term limit. Although known for championing parks and city improvement through grants, King has fashioned all six election campaigns around citizen contact to report progress and carry back ideas to council.
Terry Scott for Place 4
Scott, of 809 North Shorewood Drive, has been a resident about a year and a half. Now an international captain for a U.S. airline and a member of the Granite Shoals Airport Advisory Group, he is retired from two previous careers. In military service during Desert Storm, he earned the Air Medal and retired as a major in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, where he was an instructor pilot and an admissions liaison officer for the USAF Academy. In law enforcement, Scott was a Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) Team member and helicopter pilot with the Dallas Police Department.
Ryan Wolters for Place 4
Wolters, of 130 East Bluebriar Drive, is a realtor who has lived in the city just over three years. The native Texan is now a third-generation resident of Granite Shoals. He stands on his real estate experience to understand challenges facing the city and its needs for successful growth. In his free time he enjoys time with family and friends, cycling, camping and enjoying the outdoors.
Will Skinner for Place 6
Skinner, 34, of 1404 Kingscrest Drive, is a field technician with the Kingsland Municipal Utility District. A resident of the city for 10 years, he is active in the Highland Lakes Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and he and his wife are church youth leaders. A candidate for the council in the last regular election, he joined the Granite Shoals Parks Committee, and stresses leadership skills in his qualifications.
Publisher of The Highlander, Frank Shubert will serve as the moderator Saturday.
The forum will allow for two-minute introductory remarks from the candidates, answers to 10 questions and one-minute concluding remarks, followed by a brief time for audience questions.
This is not an official city event, so campaign materials and contact information are allowed.
