Martha Sue Lawson Butler
Martha Sue Lawson Butler
August 20, 1929 - April 14, 2018
Sue and her twin sister, Mary Lou, were born in Waco, Texas, to Bernie Wright and Pauline Thomas Lawson, joining their older brother, Bernie Wright Jr.
Sue had an idyllic childhood on a plantation in Hearne, Texas, where her father managed a large dairy. In 1946 Sue began her college career at Texas Tech. She was a proud Kappa Kappa Gamma and a lifelong Red Raider fan. She graduated with a BA in business and worked at the university the year before she married Ray Butler of Rising Star, Texas. They began their lives together in Alice, Texas, where they lived for 30 years. They moved to Horseshoe Bay in the 1980s and loved living on Slick Rock golf course. Both were avid golfers, proud Texans, faithful members of The Church at Horseshoe Bay and active Texas Tech alumni.
Ray and Sue reared two children, Amy Lawson Butler and Kelly Brent Butler. She was active in and devoted to the children’s schools, Scouts, sports, music and church activities. Sue served in leadership capacity on many boards at Alice Methodist Church and was a tireless member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service.
Sue was a style icon, a gourmet cook, an avid gardener, and a music enthusiast. She loved to read, and she and Ray traveled extensively. Their favorite summer getaway was in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. They generously shared many vacations with their children and three grandchildren, Ashley, Ainsley and Ryan … and time spent with their great grandsons, James and Vann, added tremendous joy to their lives.
Above all, Sue was devoted to God. Every day she would emphatically say, “We.are.blessed!” She was generous in every way, kind, creative, funny and loving. A joyful spirit.
Sue Butler is survived by her daughter, Amy Butler Lightfoot (Ron) of Kerrville; her grandchildren, Ashley Inscoe (Turner) of Birmingham, Alabama, Ainsley Dietz of Austin, and Ryan Ray Butler (Leila) of Corpus Christi; her great grandsons, James Turner Inscoe Jr. and Vann Butler Inscoe of Birmingham, Alabama. She leaves behind her beloved brother-in-law, Roy Butler; nieces, LouAnn Noll, Susan Hanna, Paula Blissit, Barbara Schwartz; nephews Tom Butler, Bart Butler and Brett Butler; and daughter-in-law, Laura Butler.
Sue is preceded in death by the great love of her life, Ray Butler; her son, Brent Butler; her brother, Bernie Lawson; and twin sister, Lou Butler.
