Martha Ann Lind

Martha Lind passed away peacefully on April 23, 2018, at the age of 86. She was born in Austin, Texas, on Sept. 22, 1931, and was the only child of Oran T. Gray and Nina Love Gray. Growing up in Florence, Texas, she excelled as a student and was a cheerleader for the Florence Buffalos. This likely was the beginning of her lifelong love of football. She graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in English and was a member of the A O Pi Sorority. She wanted to major in geology, but her father disallowed it, feeling that it was not a proper field for a young lady to pursue.

After graduation, Martha worked at an insurance company in Austin where she met Lt. Charles D. Roby, a dashing pilot stationed at Bergstrom AFB on a blind date. They were married on Oct. 3, 1952, in Austin. Martha enjoyed being an Air Force wife and the many travel opportunities in Europe and stateside. They had two daughters, Carol Ann and Lisa Suzanne. In 1967, Colonel Roby was shot down on a mission over North Vietnam. In 1979, Martha remarried and moved to Marble Falls.

Martha was a voracious reader and loved cats. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, sewing, needle arts, birdwatching, and gardening, although she did not inherit her mother’s green thumb as evidenced by the alarming number of dead plants in her surroundings. She loved entertaining and opened her home for parties and impromptu get-togethers with her wide circle of friends. She was the first to join in for any escapade. The intrepid adventurer most recently enjoyed zip-lining and tubing at the young age of 86.

Martha was a member of the Texas Exes and was active at Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church as a member of the choir. Over the years she served on the altar guild and participated in the Women’s Circle. She could always be counted on to bake cookies, help with Vacation Bible School, and to step in wherever there was a need.

The Green Bay Packers will be sad to learn they have lost a true fan. She was the proud owner of one share of stock in the team, attended several games and watched them on television at every opportunity.

Martha is survived by her daughter Carol Roby and partner Cheryll Statham of Kingwood, Texas; her daughter Lisa Fritz and husband Dale of Bryan, Texas; her granddaughter Lauren Allison and husband Anthony of Kingwood; her grandson Gregory Fritz of Bryan; numerous cousins; and her very spoiled and cherished rescue cat, Patricia, who brought her tremendous joy.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, April 27, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. In support of Martha’s love for the Packers, wear Packers gear or green and yellow.
