Patrons can find fun and great food at the 47th annual Howdy-Roo and 24th annual Lone Star Barbecue State Championship Cookoff at Johnson Park in Marble Falls this weekend — but one thing they should not expect to find is beans in the chili.
The 2018 chili cookoff and barbecue cookoff will be held Saturday, May 5, and the events are hosted by the Highland Lakes Pod.
Organizers say they are still accepting cooks for this Chili Appreciation Society International (CASI) sanctioned event, but, most of all, they need judges.
Judging starts at 10:30 a.m. and continues until 3 p.m. Those who can't make the first round of judging can always judge the next round of judging.
Among the categories to be judged are beans, barbecue, business chili, or Chili Appreciation Society International (CASI) chili.
The chili cookoff is a regional qualifier for the annual Terlingua International Chili Championship on the first Saturday in November at Rancho CASI de Los Chisos. Howdy-Roo is the third-largest CASI chili cookoff internationally and automatically qualifiers the top five chilis for Terlingua. More than 180 cooks usually participate.
A second CASI event, the Backbone Creek Chili Cookoff, will be held Sunday, May 6, and the public is also invited at 1 p.m. to come out and take part in judging the contest. First place in the Backbone Creek contest automatically qualifies for Terlingua.
