Powers named MFHS’ new head track coach

With the departure of Anthony Torns, Rich Powers will take over at Marble Falls High School as the head track coach.

MFHS Athletic Director Rick Hoover named Rich Powers to the position after Power had served as assistant track and assistant basketball coach for the 2017-2018 school year. “Coach Powers will bring 16 years of track experience to MFHS and has had extensive success with all his track programs,” Hoover said.

“It’s about the kids. I will continue to work and progress on the foundation Coach Torns has built,” said Powers.

The new track coach has local roots, as he’s married to to MFHS Head Volleyball Coach Tanya Powers. They have four children. Payton, Owen and Zayden all attend MFISD schools while their oldest son, Richie, is serving in the U.S. Army.

Powers has 12 years of head track coaching experience and 16 total years of coaching track. He has taken 19 different athletes to the State Track meet over the years and has several District Titles to his name.

Hoover described Powers as an “excellent” track athlete, competing in the 800 meters, 1600 meters and Long Jump.

Military connections

Powers’ service includes eight years in the United States Marine Corps, when he was the training chief responsible for the physical training of over 250 Marines each year.

He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina Wilmington with a BA in Math Education.

The coach is also a certified strength and conditioning coach through BFS and is a personal trainer certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). “This is a very important position for our athletic department as track has been one of our most successful programs over the years. I have complete faith in Coach Powers,” Hoover said.
