Marble Falls boys athletic coordinator and head football coach Michael Birdwell announced his resignation on Monday in a press release.
In the statement, Birdwell cited pursing new opportunities and challenges as the reasoning for the decision. He said he will work with the district to find a replacement coach and assist in the transition.

The Mustangs were 8-12 in Birdwell's two years as head coach, including a 5-5 season in 2018 that Birdwell listed as an accomplishment of his team. He said he is also proud that last year's Mustangs football team defeated Burnet for the first time in four years.

These accomplishments were made possible by the hard work, dedication and belief in our Mustang coaching staff and Mustang football players,” Birdwell said in his statement. “I thank all Mustangs, both past and present, as it has been my privilege to serve you as your head football coach.”

The search for a new head football coach begins immediately, according to Marble Falls Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Chris Allen.

He said the district will create an interview committee designed to allow knowledgeable individuals to express their opinion and provide input on the decision. He said the committee should and will consist of parents, teachers and other district staff – individuals who have a connection with the programs that will be affected by the hiring.

Athletic director Rick Hoover said that play style and scheme will have no bearing on the invididual chosen, and the district will find “the right person” for the job.

Birdwell's wife, Bethany, is the principal of Highland Lakes Elementary School in the district, and there has been no indictation from the district that she will vacate the position.
