Douglas Lee Conaway, 70 of Marble Falls, passed away on April 1, 2019, with his wife and dog, Poppy, by his side. He was born on April 12, 1948, to Jack Morris and Ruby (Brigner) Conaway in Brownwood, Texas.
Doug was the type of person that, once you met him, was hard to forget. He didn’t try to superficially impress you with fancy clothes or elaborate speech. His most impressive qualities were found deep inside. Doug was a man of integrity, honesty, strength and generosity. His character made him a loyal husband and father and successful businessman.
He was well-known in the Marble Falls community as the owner and operator of Hill Country Office Machines, now Hill Country Office Solutions. Doug preferred serving this community in the capacity of a small business owner as opposed to working for a corporation. It gave him the freedom to make his own decisions. He believed in doing the right thing for the customer, even if it cost him and his business money. Doug was a man of his word. When he made a promise, you could count on it.
When Doug decided to sell his business, there was only one person he trusted to take it over – Ray Cardenas. Ray had been an employee for many years and Doug was so proud of his contributions to the business. It gave Doug great peace knowing that his customers would be left in Ray’s capable hands.
When he wasn’t working, he was often helping others in another way. If you saw him at HEB with a cart full of groceries, there is a chance that they weren’t for him. He had a generous heart that often thought of those in need. One of his favorite activities was donating food to the Helping Center in Marble Falls. One day he walked in to donate some food. Dressed in t-shirt and sweatpants in the typical Doug fashion, the staff mistook him for a client and began politely explaining today was not food distribution day. There were chuckles all around when the misunderstanding came to light.
Doug loved his family and treasured the moments spent with them. He and his son Jarrett could often be found deep in conversation about life, science or the mystery of the black hole. Doug loved reading and learning. He enjoyed a broad range of topics from science-fiction to self-sustaining gardening. He was an intellectual who soaked up knowledge like a sponge.
Doug suffered for many years with COPD. Being the intellectual that he was, he studied about the condition and took a proactive role in his treatment decisions. He was solution-oriented and chose to focus on what he could do rather than what he couldn’t.
Doug’s legacy of integrity, generosity and strength will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him. Doug will be remembered each time his friends and family gaze up into the night sky contemplating the great mysteries above.
Doug is survived by his wife Sandra Conaway and son Jarrett Conaway of Marble Falls, Texas; sisters Debbie Swearington of Georgetown, Texas and Judy Wilson of Missouri; brother Bobby Conaway of Temple, Texas; brother-in-law Ron Landriault and wife Catherine of Maple Ridge, BC, Canada; sister-in-law Sharron McStay and husband Bruce of Regina, Saskatchewan; and numerous nieces and nephews. Doug is also survived by his cherished business successor Ray Cardenas, his wife Margie and children Eric and Elise, whom Doug considered extended family. He was preceded in death by parents Morris and Ruby Conaway, sister Barb Conaway and brother Butch Morris Conaway.
