Burnet County jail seeks to fill staffing gaps

The Burnet County Sheriff's Office faces a personnel gap at the jail and has offered to pay “competitive” salaries to coax potential employees to the facility.

“We have a few openings and need to fill them. We had several that moved on to other positions,” Sheriff Calvin Boyd said. “Normally we don't have that many openings. It's kind of unusual.”

A recent exodus resulted in eight openings at the Burnet County Jail, 900 County Ln., which could cause an issue depending on how the jail population “fluctuates,” Boyd added.

“We have so many contracts with so many entities like other counties and the U.S. Marshals service,” he said. “Sometimes we have about 300 inmates. Sometimes we have over 500.” The jail can hold about 580 inmates.

The tiered experience system would allow for non-certified candidates to work towards Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) certification. . . .
