Jack Edwin Hammond, 99, of Sunrise Beach Village, Texas, passed away on May 31, 2019. He was born to Joseph Tallman Hammond and Alta Lena Sparkman on Feb. 20, 1920 in Dallas, Texas.
After high school, Jack studied at SMU and Texas Tech University while serving in the National Guard. After three years and four months, he went on to serve four years and six months in the US Army, 112th Calvary unit, in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He played in the military band overseas and in combat actions, he assisted medical personnel in evacuating casualties and carried rations on foot to the front line. On July 19, 1944, he was wounded in action in New Guinea and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, and for other service, he was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Battle Stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal with three Bronze Battle Stars and the American Defense Service Medal.
On December 4, 1942, Jack married Mary Frances Wickham. After returning home from the Army, Jack and Frances lived in Dallas, Texas where he started a custom wood working shop and produced handmade furniture for many years. They moved to Lewisville, Texas for the next 25 years where he worked in several businesses and continued using his wood working and fabrication skills.
Jack and Frances moved to a lakefront house in Sunrise Beach, Texas in 1983 to enjoy retirement, where Jack spent most of his time in his shop, doing what he liked the most, making things. Frances passed away in March of 2013, after more than 70 years of marriage.
For the last four years, Jack lived at the Wyoming Springs Assisted Living Center in Round Rock, Texas. He made many new friends and enjoyed the afternoon happy hour gatherings, where on Wednesdays he danced until dinner was served.
Mr. Hammond is survived by a son, George Hammond and wife Karen of Austin, Texas; a grandson, Jason Hammond and wife Staci; and great-grandson Chase Hammond of Walnut Creek, California.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Naneda Farley; and a son, Charles Hammond.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 9, 2019 at the Sandy Mountain Cemetery in Sunrise Beach Village, Texas.
