Dorothy Myrick Owen
Dorothy Myrick Owen
July 8, 1918 — November 7, 2019
Dorothy Myrick Owen, 101, of Kingsland and Burnet, Texas, entered her new life with our Lord on Nov. 7 with her daughter, son-in-law, and hospice nurse at her side. She was born to Joe and Della Myrick on July 8, 1918, in Eldorado, Texas.
After graduating from Brady High School, she went on to John Tarleton Agricultural & Mechanical College to earn a teaching certificate in 1937. Dorothy taught at Behrens School where she had seven grades under one roof. She jokingly said that she was teaching students that were almost her age, being at the time only 19.
On Feb. 18, 1939, she married Herbert Granvel Owen in Brady, Texas. Eventually as a young couple they moved to Houston. While in Houston for nearly 35 years, Dorothy worked retail, substitute taught, was an assistant librarian and worked in the Spring Branch School District Library Processing Center. Shortly before her beloved Herbert retired from Mosher Steel, she moved to Kingsland, Texas, to take the Kingsland Librarian position. Dorothy started in the little one room building which was located on Highway 1431 near what’s now the current Post Office. While Librarian, she implemented the Dewey Decimal System for classifying and organizing the growing number of books in the library. She was involved in the construction of the current Kingsland Library building and organized the move from its meager beginnings to the current location.
She was a Life Time Member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 437 of Kingsland, where she held several elected offices. She actively participated in numerous Auxiliary events and enjoyed the camaraderie when attending many of the Auxiliary conventions. Dorothy served her Lord many ways during her 101 years on this earth and was a charter member of Highland Lakes United Methodist Church in Buchanan Dam, Texas. Among many things Dorothy did, she loved to read, sew, go fishing, do floral arrangements, cook, entertain and most of all be with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and family. Her warm and loving smile will be missed by all.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Linda Owen Armstrong and husband Dave of Lake Buchanan; grandchildren, Shane Owen and wife Natalie of Smithville; Andrea Owen Petiton and husband Justin, of Austin; and Ashley Owen Tierney and husband Matt, of Florida; and three great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Herbert Granvel Owen; and son, David Clinton Owen.
Serving as pallbearers will be Shane Owen, Dave Armstrong, Barry Myrick, Nick Bledsoe, Michael Stoddard and Justin Petiton.
