Carl Henry Gassoway

August 30, 1940 — December 25, 2019

Join in celebrating the life of Carl Henry Gassoway, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother. Carl passed away quietly from a longterm heart condition on Dec. 25 at the Granite Mesa Health Center in Marble Falls, Texas.

Carl was a proud marine that loved his family and his country. He served as a combat helicopter gunner in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart recognition for wounds received in battle. After his career as a military officer he worked as an executive for General Dynamics. While working one Christmas Eve, Carl stood at the door where employees left the building and greeted each one individually. The following Monday morning there was a rush of employees requesting to transfer to his division and supervision.

Always a beloved leader, Carl was a long time member and supporter of the Austin and Hill Country VFW organizations, volunteering in many roles over the years. Texas grilling and barbecue was one of Carl’s favorite pastimes. His marinated barbecue chicken was some of the best, and his chili recipe was renowned.

Carl is survived by his widow, Shirley Gassoway; and his stepson, Michael Steenbergen, both of Meadowlakes, Texas. Carl is also survived by his sister, Geraldine Quilici; four children; five grandchildren; and great-grandchildren; Annette Webb, her husband Dennis Webb; Joann Nangle, and her children Adam and Brian Nangle; Debra Gassoway, her husband Dave Bezdecny; Donnie Gassoway and his wife Lori Gassoway and their children Daniel, Alex and Dillon.

Carl’s final disposition and private services were in the care of Clement Wilcox Funeral Home in Marble Falls. Please remember Carl with prayers and good wishes. The widow and family welcome your personal notes and kindly request, in lieu of flowers, a donation to the American Heart Association as a tribute to Carl’s memory. Website: heart.org.
