Damon Floyd Polk
August 8, 1949 — January 10, 2020
Damon Floyd Polk Jr., 70, of Kingsland, Texas, passed away on Jan. 10, 2020. He was born on Aug. 8, 1949 to Damon Floyd Polk, Sr. and Hazel (Bannister) Polk in Lubbock, Texas. Damon was raised in Anchorage, Alaska. Damon was always proud to tell people he lived above the Five Fifteen Club. His father owned the Five Fifteen Club, which was a local nightclub well-known for being the starting point for the dog sled races.
In 1963, Damon’s family moved to Kingsland – sight unseen – after surviving devastating earthquakes in Alaska. Damon later graduated from Llano High School and moved to Austin to pursue his career. He worked for the Bank of Austin as the vice president over the tellers for 18 years and later for State Farm Insurance. Damon made life-long friends at the bank and State Farm – friendships that he deeply treasured.
In the years after moving to Kingsland in 1991, he attended Kingsland Community Church and First Baptist of Kingsland. He was a proud member of the National Rifle Association and American Bankers Association. Damon collected guns of all kinds and enjoyed shooting them. Each gun handled differently…shot differently…and sounded differently. He enjoyed the challenge of mastering the accuracy of each. Damon also loved motorcycles and old, classic cars. He was known to attend many car shows in his life and has a broad collection of model cars.
Closest to Damon’s heart was his family and his weenie dogs: Loretta and Stoney. He loved his family and cherished the moments spent with them. Damon will be remembered for his intelligent way of approaching life, his sense of humor, and his faith in God.
Damon will be remembered by his daughter, Dawn Helgren and husband Blair of Austin; son, Damon Polk III and wife Stephanie of Pflugerville; grandchildren, Brooke and Ashlyn Helgren and Adelyn and Connor Polk. He was preceded in death by his parents, Damon and Hazel Polk.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020, at Putnam Funeral Home, 145 Texas Avenue in Kingsland, with Brittany Carrington as celebrant. An online registry may be signed at PutnamCares.com.
