Wayne Howard Sims
Wayne Howard Sims
Dec. 3, 1940 – July 26, 2015
Wayne Howard Sims, animal lover, ladies' man, Jim Beam aficionado, Mexican food connoisseur and accomplished xeriscaper, was born in Burnet County, Texas, on Dec. 3, 1940, and passed away at the age of 74 in Bexar County, Texas, on Sunday, July 26, 2015.
Upon graduating from high school in 1957, he soon realized working at the local quarry was not providing the excitement or paycheck he craved.
In 1959, he joined the Navy, earned an appointment to Air Traffic Control School based on his perfect test scores, and was stationed in Adak, Alaska, where he honed his skills.
After the Navy, Wayne returned to his beloved Texas and served as tower chief at every international airport in Texas.
Even with all of his own accomplishments, Wayne took the most pride in his children and grand-children. He taught them to fish, sail, appreciate their ancestors, select quality products for their toolboxes, love nature, despise televangelists and to just be thankful.
He excelled at growing Chile patins and grape tomatoes, propagating native vegetation, living life simply, yet fully, and outsmarting squirrels.
He held a fondness for spaghetti westerns, his dogs, completing crossword puzzles in pen, chicharrones, tripas, whiskey and collecting coins. Not necessarily in that order. He was quite a character and will be missed.
He was preceded in death by: his son, Patrick Everett Sims; his parents, Wilburn Everett Sims and Clara Fry Sims, and his brother, Charles Sims.
Wayne is survived by: his daughters, Jennifer Sims Crews and Lorrie Sims Garcia; granddaughters, Audrey Patrice Garcia and Annabella Presley Garcia; brother, Jerry Sims; son-in-law, Roger Garcia, and many other loving family and friends, plus a few ex-wives and girlfriends.
The family would like to thank the Brookdale Castle Hills/Clarebridge Memory Care staff and Hospice nurses for their continual love and support.
In lieu of a service, the family will honor Wayne by spending time outdoors in this great state of Texas and in scattering his ashes in places he loved, like Marble Falls and the ocean.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, people plant a native Texas tree in a beautiful spot.
And, another thing, everyone who met him is encouraged to reflect on his memory in their own way – raising a glass in his honor would be quite appropriate.
Wayne was a proud son of Texas, Navy veteran, and air traffic controller.
