Mary Kathryn McGanity passed away on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015, in Atlanta, Georgia, and went to join her husband, Bill, through God’s grace, in heaven.
“Mary McG” will be remembered always as a loving woman who gave her all to her husband, her extended family, her friends (new and old,) her pets, and to everyone she encountered.
She will be remembered by her family as a loving, caring and guiding mother who lived by continuously giving and providing a lifelong model to her family of how to live well.
Mary never knew a stranger.
Mother Mary was born on July 10, 1925, in Montreal, Quebec, to Louis and Lucille Hambrock.
She went on to complete her undergraduate degree at McGill University in Montreal. She met the love of her life, Bill, skiing in the Laurentian mountains in Quebec.
Bill and Mary married and resided in Toronto.
They eventually migrated to Texas by way of Nashville, Tennessee.
In Texas, Mary and Bill split their time between Galveston and the Hill Country outside of Marble Falls.
Though she had moved to the States, Mary always loved her Canadian home country.
Momma Mary spent her early career as a medical technologist at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
Later, she stayed home to raise her children, Peter, Martha, David and Wilfried Hahn of Germany.
Momma loved the outdoors whether snow skiing in Aspen, golfing with Bill in the Canadian Maritimes and Ireland, traveling the world, caring for her pets, gardening or bicycling in Quebec with her lifelong friend, “Mimi.”
Mary and Bill dedicated much of their non-family life to the UTMB Medical Branch, other philanthropies and churches.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William “Bill” James McGanity.
She is survived by her children and their spouses: Dr. Peter McGanity and wife, Carol, Martha and Paul Reinhart and David and Lynne McGanity.
