As rains douse the Highland Lakes area, the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Thursday, June 2.

Eyewitness reports in the city of Burnet show that the majority of Pecan Street was underwater as of 8:24 a.m. Thursday, and meteorologists are forecasting more rain throughout the day.

“At 7:31 a.m., CDT Doppler Radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across much of Williamson and northern Burnet Counties,” the warning stated. “Up to one inch of rain has already fallen. Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly.”

NWS officials said a flash flood warning means “flooding is imminent or occurring. If you are in a warned area, move to higher ground immediately. Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate precautions to protect life and property.”

Meteorologists forecast a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms in the area Thursday afternoon and evening, a 50 percent chance of rain on Friday, and an 80 percent chance on Saturday.

The Highland Lakes is one of many areas of Texas that suffered flooding over the past few weeks of heavy rainfall. In the north plains region, at least six have been confirmed dead, and several towns evacuated in flooding events, NWS officials said.
