Coach Hale dead at 74 in Spicewood auto accident

Coach Clovis Hale has died at age 74.

One of the greats in Texas coaching was killed Saturday, July 2, in a one-car accident on Texas 71 in Spicewood.
Clovis Hale, 74, who resided in Spicewood, was alone in his 2003 Tahoe left the unimproved shoulder of the road about 4:16 p.m. The report by Department of Public Safety Trooper Jose Colombo said the vehicle struck a power pole and continued through a fence into trees before his vehicle rolled one and a half times.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by Burnet County Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Debbie Bindseil of Spicewood.
Hale was a University of Texas Longhorn assistant football coach from 1987-91 and a Texas Tech Red Raiders offensive line coach. Hale was on the Tech staff from 1984-86 under Jerry Moore and Spyke Dykes and again from 1997-99, Dykes’ last seasons.
He coached also at Rice University, North Texas University and the University of Iowa.
He was not only a notable college coach, but coached high school football in the 60s and 70s for Lubbock High School, Big Spring High School and San Angelo Lake View High School.
