County taxes may decrease for second year in a row
BY ALEXANDRIA RANDOLPH/BURNET BULLETIN
Burnet County Commissioners will soon discuss the possibility of lowering the tax rate for the second year in a row.
In a recent court meeting, county commissioners said that due to increased property values, the effective taxing rate had decreased by .13 percent for the fiscal year. The effective tax rate is the rate that will produce roughly the same amount of revenue as the previous year.
“The effective rate went from .4025 (cents per $100) to .3974,” said Burnet County Judge James Oakley.

“The effective rate went from .4025 (cents per $100) to .3974,” said Burnet County Judge James Oakley.
If the effective rate is approved, taxes on $193,000 home, which is the county average, would be $767 based on the tax rate of .3974 per $100 valuation. This tax is just one dollar over the $766 that would have been taxed at last year's rate of .4025 on a home value of $184,907, which was last year's average home value.
If the rate of .3974 is approved, it will be the second year the tax rate was decreased, and maintained at effective rate.
Commissioners will consider the new tax rate in upcoming budgetary discussions during their regular bimonthly meetings. The next commissioners court meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 12.
