Gordon Raymond Schlagel

Major Gordon (Gordie) Raymond Schlagel, Sr. USMC, Ret., 78 of Horseshoe Bay Texas “sunk his last putt on” Thursday, May 5, 2016 in the comfort of his home, ending a long battle with cancer. Born on Dec. 11, 1937 in Chicago Illinois to Cecilia and Arthur Schlagel, and raised in Lisle Illinois he was the middle brother of Edward Schlagel and Richard Schlagel. Gordie was an All American Catcher at DePauw University and earned his business degree from the University of Nebraska Omaha. Gordie matriculated through the US Naval Aviation Cadet Program, received his wings and took an option to join the United States Marine Corps. Gordie then served his country honorably during the Vietnam War, was a Pistol Expert and Flight Instructor and received several medals including three Combat Action Ribbons and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. Gordie was an avid golfer, caring husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. A staunch Marine, Gordie also had a generous and compassionate side. He has touched many lives and will be dearly missed. Gordie is survived by his brothers Ed Schlagel and Rich Schlagel, son Gordon (Ray) Schlagel Jr, step daughters Sherrie Ivey, Cathy Stewart, grandchildren Peyton, Jenna, Ryan, Cassie, Jason and longtime companion, Frances “Boo” McRobert, along with many other loving members of his extended family. At Gordie’s request, no formal services will be held. A Celebration of Life and a private interment will be held at a later date. The family is grateful for condolences. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
