Lady Mustangs stand at the top of district

It’s break time and the Lady Mustangs are buying in.

So far, so good as far as coach John Berkman is concerned.

The team has not only snapped a 29-game losing streak in district basketball games, but the team is leading the district.

Two wins in a row in dominate fashion has the Lady Mustangs smiling going into Christmas.

“I’m happy, up to this point,’’ Berkman said of his 14-7 team. “We’re still learning our self…They are buying into the team aspect of it all. They are learning their roles. Whether they are playing a lot of minutes or a few minutes, they are all rooting for each other and making the most of the time they are out there.’’

The girls have earned their way to the top of District 26-5A utilizing a fierce matchup zone defense. At the head of the defense is Mya McMillian, protecting the heart of the lane with a big wing span. The teammates are using their feet and hands to protect the valuable goal. Nothing comes cheap against this bunch of hungry athletes.

The starting five all season has been McMillian, Aubree Adams, Aspen Woerner, Molly Myrick and Morgan Hagood. The team is deep with others coming off the bench to play their roles.
