Goar honored in New Mexico

Burnet County’s Lela Glimp Goar was inducted into the New Mexico Activities Association Hall of Fame in ceremonies held March 9 in Albuquerque, New Mexico .

The ring ceremony honored her years of service as an individual who has made significant contributions to Interscholastic and family related activities in New Mexico .

According to a press release by the organization, the individual must show great support for and involvement in formulating regulations and procedures for various interscholastic programs, and they must have 25 years of service, of which 20 must have been in New Mexico . The candidate is then screened by the New Mexico Hall of Fame Selection Committee. As a member of the Class of 2017, Lela Glimp Goar will be the 102nd member of the prestigious group.

After receiving her Bachelor’s Degree from Southwest Texas State University and Master’s Degree from Texas Tech, Goar moved to New Mexico and began her tenure as a teacher and Family, Career & Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) advisor for Clovis Municipal Schools. After 17 years, she became a part time instructor at Eastern New Mexico University. She did, however, continue her involvement with activities as the New Mexico FCCLA State Advisor.

“Regardless of where you come from or what your interests are, there is something for you in Family, Career & Community Leaders of America. It teaches you skills you will use the rest of your life.,” Goar said.

Goar’s involvement in Burnet County is extensive, plus the Glimp family has a long history of involvement in the community. She is active in the United Methodist Church, active in the Bethel Extension Education Club, serves on the Burnet County Farm Bureau Board of Directors, and is a member of the Burnet Historical Commission and the Burnet County Genealogical Society. As chairwoman of the Certified Local Government Committee in Burnet County, she has worked toward the preservation of two historic bridges in northeast Burnet County.

Goar’s involvement in FCCLA activities dates back to her high school years. “I was a member of Future Homemakers of America (now FCCLA) when I was in school at Burnet High School. The joy I found through the organization and the leadership opportunities made such a difference in my life. I wanted to pass those opportunities on to others,” she said.

Even though she is retired, she continues her involvement in FCCLA by reading scholarships for Texas FCCLA each year and doing consultant work for the Minnesota and Illinois FCCLA. She serves as editor of the Texas Extension Education Association state newspaper. She received the association’s State Leadership Award in 2011.
