Families from all over the Hill Country are invited to take a field trip to the Upper Highland Lakes Nature Center (UHLNC) for a day of fun from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 6.

The center took its educational show on nature on the road earlier this year with a series of programs at the Numinous Coffee Roasters in Marble Falls. Now, each of the programs featured in the series, will return to the center with even more to learn from knowledgable volunteers.

We will have guided hikes, a visit to archaelogy dig site and tours of the Monarch butterfly and keyhole gardens and the center's rainwater collection system,” said Susan Yewell, a member of Friends of the UHLNC. “Families can bring a picnic lunch and get up, close, and personal to nature. You can even peer into nature's unseen world through a microscope.”

A rare metamorphic rock outcrop was exposed in this part of the Llano Uplift in the 2007 floods and that is a special geologic point of interest,” Yewell added.

Reservations to participate are being accepted by calling Yewell at 505-699-5127.

Visitors will find the center on Revielle Ranch, eight miles northwest of Burnet. It is located on Burnet County Road 114 and three easy routes are available from various parts of the area.

From Burnet, travelers can take Texas 28 west from the US 281 intersection (2-3 miles) to Farm to Market Road 2341 (Canyon of the Eagles Road) The road widens in about 4.5 miles to provide a turn lane. A left to 105 County Road 114, the entrance on the left in just 100 yards. Parking and the center pavillion are located down a gravel driveway into the ranch (30º48.468-98º20.055).

Master Naturalists like Billy Hutson, who sparked the inception of a nature laboratory in the wilds of 1,300 acres of animal, bird, insect and plant habitat, make up many of the volunteers for programs and scheduled field trips. Others, such as Chuck Hixson, an anthropoligist from the Llano Uplift Archaeological Society, are drawn from their particular fields of expertise.
