Spicewood resident Damon Reid Hollingsworth, died peacefully February 20, 2016.
Son of Henry Reid Hollingsworth and Ruth Riddell Hollingsworth, Damon was born August 9, 1922, in Spicewood, the oldest of six children.
Graduating Dripping Springs High in 1940 he played basketball, baseball, ran track, and was an All- American six-man football player.
Because Dripping Springs High went through eleventh grade at the time, Damon attended San Marcos Academy to finish his senior year before attending college at Stephen F. Austin.
Damon played basketball and ran track at SFA before WWII called.
He joined the Air Force as a Staff Sargent at Lackland AFB, then the reserves. Damon went back to school playing baseball, where he was selected an All-Lone Star Conference shortstop.
He graduated from SFA in 1947 with an education degree and Masters of Education Administration from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1951.
During this time he met and married Virginia Gary of San Antonio. They had three children, Elizabeth, Damon Lee and Nancy. Later they also adopted their nephew, Virgil Ray.
He began coaching at Harris Jr. High in San Antonio, then Edison High, then the University of Corpus Christi and then Northeast High School in San Antonio.
He taught biology at Robert E. Lee High School, served as Vice-Principal at Nimitz Jr. High, and Principal at Ed White Jr. High until retirement in 1982.
Damon grew up Baptist, active in his church throughout his life, serving many ways as deacon, Sunday school teacher, R.A. leader, Pastor’s Associate, member of the choir, training union leader, mission’s committee member and other positions.
He was involved with Texas Baptist Men for over forty years on the city and state levels.
He was energized while building/improving churches or raising money to start new churches.
In 1992 he returned to Spicewood from San Antonio living in the Hill Country until the end of his life.
Latter years were spent continuing service with Texas Baptist Men, church, and working at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home.
He is survived by his three children; Damon Lee, Nancy, and Virgil; six grandchildren; Bryan, Meredith, Andrew, Courtney, Kimberly and Leah; and seven great-grandchildren: Ryan, Drew, Chloe, Rachel, Claire, Kennedy and Kinley.
He was preceded in death by; his parents; brothers Billy Henry and Kenneth; and daughter Elizabeth.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29, located at Clements- Wilcox Funeral Home in Marble Falls.
