An accident has claimed the lives of two women on US 281 near Park Road 4 outside Burnet, Texas Department of Safety troopers said.
It was one of a number of serious accidents on Burnet County highways within a 30-hour period, according to DPS troopers.
The single-vehicle fatality accident happened at about 2 p.m. Saturday, June 24. A 2012 Hyundai, driven by Lila Acosta, 34, of El Paso, was traveling south at a high rate of speed on US 281 when it passed another vehicle in the outside lane and lost control, DPS Staff Sgt. Robbie Barrera said.
The vehicle spun in a counter-clockwise direction on the wet roadway and went off the road to the east, traveling through a fence and rolling on to its right side and top. A passenger in the vehicle, Audrey Regnold, 31, of Marble Falls, was ejected from the car and died at the scene, Barrera said. Her body was transported to Edgar Funeral Home.
Acosta was partially ejected from the vehicle and was transported to Seton Highland Lakes Hospital in Burnet, but was pronounced dead at the emergency room, Barrera said.
Later Saturday, a Bertram police officer was injured on Texas 29 in town when the officer initiated a traffic stop on one vehicle and a second vehicle collided with the first, causing it to hit the officer.
The accident shut down traffic for miles on Texas 29 east and west of the 700 block of Texas 29 West, where the accident occurred. Burnet County Sheriff's deputies, Bertram firefighters and EMS responded to the accident. The officer was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released for a leg injury.
At about 2:15 p.m. Friday, June 23, there was a three-vehicle accident on Texas 29 between Liberty Hill and Bertram in front of Best of the West gun range that had traffic blocked and resulted in at least two people being taken to the hospital with injuries reported not to be life-threatening.
The accident happened near old Texas 29 in Williamson County, just near the Burnet County line and left debris across the highway, leading officers to shut down traffic until it could be cleared.
