Granite Shoals honors veterans Saturday

The Veterans Day Celebration in Granite Shoals is best served with sunshine, as it was here in 2014 and as expected this Saturday, Nov. 4. In fair weather or foul, the program honoring those who have served in all branches of the service from all over the Highland Lakes are welcome guests for a program and lunch at the Veterans Park pavilion on south Phillips Ranch Road.

The annual Granite Shoals Veterans Celebration will be held this Saturday, Nov. 4, a week in advance of Veterans Day and just in time for a sunny and cool fall venue.
The 2017 event will be held again at Veterans Park, 1208 South Phillips Ranch Road, with a complimentary lunch veteran military service men and women and their families at the park pavilion.
A brief program begins at 11 a.m. with a flag ceremony by the Highland Lakes Honor Guard and a performance by the Highland Lakes Men's Chorus.
The Rev. Calvin Jones of Grace United Methodist Church in Granite Shoals will share brief remarks before lunch is served.
The local pastor served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force. He came to the city from Burnet First United Methodist Church.
“We welcome our neighbors from up and down the lakes and active military personnel as well to this annual event,” said Seth Smith of the city parks committee. “It is a great chance for civilians to meet veterans and thank them for their service. Bring your children to get to know them, too.”
The celebration began through the efforts of former city councilwoman Toni Goodman King more than a decade ago. A few events have soldiered on through a a few gray rainy mornings, but this year the outdoor celebration has the weatherman on it's side. A chilly night should dawn sunny and bright heading to a high for the day in the mid-60 degrees.
