W. Robert Berg CPA, 85, passed away in his Horseshoe Bay home on May 12, 2018. Bob was born Dec. 27, 1932, to Ada and Olof Berg in Dayton, Iowa — a town whose population has never exceeded three digits. Though he liked to joke about the lack of indoor plumbing and trudging to his one room school house through five-foot snowdrifts (uphill each way), his childhood drove his desire to provide well for his family.
Bob majored in accounting at the University of Iowa, earning a B.S. with high honors in 1954. He was a lifelong fan of Iowa sports, teaching his children the fight song and flying the Hawkeye flag in his backyard.
After graduation he moved to Kansas City to work for Big Eight accounting firm Arthur Young. On an audit he met his wife, Barbara Anderson (but they couldn’t start dating until the audit was finished). They married in 1956 and raised their two daughters in the Kansas City area.
In 1960, Bob joined Bartlett and Company, a closely held agribusiness firm, eventually becoming Vice Chairman and Chief Financial officer. He was a member of the Kansas City Board of Trade and served as Chairman of the Financial Informational Committee of the National Grain and Feed Dealers Association. He also was president of the Hillcrest Country Club.
The only achievement he insisted be included in his obituary was sinking five holes-in-one. Love of golf is what drew Bob and Barbara to Horseshoe Bay, where they became permanent residents in 1995 and he enjoyed a golf-filled retirement. Over the years he has served as treasurer of the Hill Country Men’s Golf Association and on the Horseshoe Bay POA board. He also was on the Board of Trustees for The Church at Horseshoe Bay and served as assistant treasurer and head usher for the church.
He is survived by his wife Barbara; his daughter, Robin of Vienna, Virginia; his daughter, Terri and husband, Brian Smith, and grandson, Andrew Smith of Rockville, Maryland and granddaughter Claire Smith of Silver Spring, Maryland and his sister, Joanne Lindenberg of Dubuque, Iowa.
