Alice Lorayne (Cook) Thurmond Marshall

July 3, 1921 — April 11, 2019

Alice Lorayne (Cook) Thurmond Marshall, 97, of Kingsland, Texas, went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 11, 2019. She was born on July 3, 1921 to Walter Thomas and Malissa (Manning) Cook in Mineral, Texas. She married William F. Thurmond on March 9, 1941. They had two sons, William Allen and Gerald Thomas Thurmond.

Alice always enjoyed church, school and community work. As a young mother, she taught 5-year-olds in her church. She was employed by GMAC, two oil companies, San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and two tours with the federal government, retiring from the Social Security Administration. She was a Bexar County Chairman of the March of Dimes and worked with a county nurse administering Salk vaccine to school children.

During her children’s school years, she was active in PTA, president of two locals and the first president of N.E. School District PTA Council. Because of her dedication, she was awarded lifetime membership in Texas PTA. After retiring, Bill and Alice moved to Rockport, Texas and, with the help of a few friends, organized the first couples Sunday School class, which is still very active. They also worked on the church directory along with several others. After Bill’s death, Alice moved to Kingsland, Texas where she met and married Roscoe Marshall.

Alice was adored by her community and will be fondly remembered by those who had the pleasure of knowing her. Alice considered herself blessed to have made so many friends during her and Bill’s retirement years. She referred to her old friends as gold and new friends as silver – both priceless treasures in her heart.

Alice is survived by her sons, Bill Allen Thurmond and wife Cindy, Gerald Thomas Thurmond and wife Teresa Kopec; six grandchildren, Bill Jr. and wife Lynne, Michelle Yates and husband Pat, Megan Jung and husband Scott, Nathan Thurmond and wife Miranda, Ben Thurmond, and Elizabeth Thurmond; great-grandchildren, Toni and Ryan Sudderth, Justin and Elizabeth Thurmond, Caitlynne and Brook Yates, Jasmine Lorayne and Jaden Atkins, and Damion Jung; great-great grandchildren, Harper and Hayden Sudderth, and Jordan and Taylor Thurmond; sister-in-law, Nancy Thurmond; nieces and nephews, Betty Allen, Jinee Rizzo, Jimmy Thurmond, Nancy Broyles, Jane Thurmond, and Stephen Thurmond; and many life-long friends.

Thurmond; second husband of 9 ½ years, Roscoe Marshall; sister-in-law, Sybil Thurmond; and nephew, Bruce Allen.
