Norbert “Bert” Lee Winkler
April 11, 1932 — July 5, 2019
Norbert “Bert” Lee Winkler, 87, of Kingsland, Texas, passed away on July 5, 2019. He was born to Charles and Mary Elizabeth (Kainer) Winkler on April 11, 1932 in High Hill, Texas.
Mr. Winkler played football and was a competitive tennis player in high school. He proudly served his country in the Unites States Army and played competitive tennis where he partnered and competed with men of all ranks. With his military obligation complete, Bert enrolled at the University of Texas and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering.
On June 4, 1960 in LaGrange, Texas, he married Nancy Ann Hajovsky. He began his career in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Corpus Christi before settling in San Antonio with Valero Energy Corporation.
As a husband, Bert was loyal and proud; as a father, he supported, encouraged, and cheered his children to accomplish the most they could; as a grandfather, he basked in the achievements and success of his granddaughters.
Upon his retirement from Valero and Nancy’s retirement from teaching, they motored in all 48 lower states and Alaska with their RV. They especially enjoyed the vastness and solitude of the western states. Home base was established in Kingsland, Texas in 1989 where Bert loved to fish and hunt. He introduced his oldest son to hunting and was able to hunt the same lease for 30 years. His final hunt ended with Nancy taking their last deer – a ten-point whitetail.
Bert was a self-taught carpenter. He used his skills volunteering many hours repairing and expanding St. Charles Borromero Catholic Church in Kingsland. This was an endeavor a special group of men took upon themselves in the 1990's an early 2000's. Together they found fellowship and friendship that left a legacy of love to be used and enjoyed by future generations. Bert is among the last of this group of men who etched their mark on this parish with perfectly laid floor tiles, level countertops, effortless gliding cabinet doors, and spacious meeting areas.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Winkler of Kingsland; children, Steve Winkler and wife Brenda of Euless, Texas, Gregory Winkler of Kingsland, Texas, Lee Ann Moore of Willington, North Carolina; and granddaughters, Megan and Katelyn Winkler of Euless, Texas. He is preceded in death by his mother; father; eight siblings; and son-in-law, John Moore.
