In his childhood, Elijah Brown lived in Buchanan Dam and Granite Shoals before attending Marble Falls schools. When his father became pastor of First Baptist Church in Bertram, Brown finished his high school education at Burnet High School, where he graduated in 1999.

It was a joy to grow up in this area,” said Brown, who currently serves in Washington D.C. as the executive vice president of the 21st Century Wilberforce Initiative, which focuses on international religious freedom.

On July 7, the Baptist World Alliance’s general council at a meeting in Bangkok elected him to serve as the next general secretary.

Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) representatives present a $24,000 Community Development Partnership grant to purchase a system to refill air tanks at the Buchanan Volunteer Fire Department. Pictured on Monday, May 22, from left, are: Wade Williamson, Buchanan Fire Department lieutenant; Amanda Lehmann, department secretary; Lori A. Berger, LCRA Board member; Tim Gardner, firefighter; Mike Butler, Fire Department captain; Fire Chief Mark Hutson; Assistant Chief Chad Mitchell; Raymond A. “Ray” Gill Jr., LCRA Board member; and Steve Dyer, LCRA governmental and regional affairs representative.

The Buchanan Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) will purchase equipment to safely and quickly refill firefighter air tanks with the help of a $24,000 community development grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA).

Thieves broke into the fire station off Texas 29 in Llano County in January and damaged or destroyed a large amount of equipment, including the air compressor used to refill the air tanks firefighters use when responding to hazards.

The fire department will use the grant to buy a new compressor, a station that can fill two air cylinders at a time, and a system of six high-pressure cylinders that firefighters can take with them on calls to refill individual air tanks.

An additional $6,000 in local matching funds will help pay for the equipment.

The Buchanan Volunteer Fire Department (BVFD) Annual BBQ will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Red Barn Community Center, 2395 Texas 261/Lakeshore Drive, in Buchanan Dam.

The barbecue lunch with sweets from the BVFD Auxiliary and ladies church groups will be served until the food is gone, beginning at 11 a.m.

A silent auction and a free bounce house for children will be available in addition to the lunch and sweet sale. A fire extinguisher training class for all ages will be conducted and fire trucks and equipment will be on display next door at the fire hall.

“We are looking forward to showing off our new fire truck,” said Tommy Phillips, BVFD treasurer. “We worked toward it for more than seven years and proceeds from this event will help us buy equipment for it.”
