Vernon Earl “Buddy” Schrader passed away peacefully January 8, 2017, with his wife Barbara by his side.
He was born in 1936 near Gonzales, Texas, the youngest of three children of Charlie and Gladys Schrader. Buddy graduated from Gonzales High School where he was a member of the Apache football team. He was named All South Texas and All Central Texas Center and Linebacker.
He received a football scholarship to Trinity University in San Antonio and served as captain of the team in 1957. He graduated in 1958 with a B.S. degree and received a commission in the ROTC program. In 1961 he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Reserve as a first lieutenant.
Buddy spent thirty-five years with Luby’s, Inc., retiring in 1994 as Vice-President of Operations/Marketing. While with Luby’s, he received a Presidential Citation from Ronald Reagan for his work in Nancy Reagan’s Drug Education program.
