Early voting in the Saturday, May 5, local elections has begun in Burnet and Llano counties and eligible voters will have extended hours to cast their early ballot both this week and next.

The weather is warm and flowers are blooming, but heading into the great out of doors warrants caution about snakes and wildlife.

Already this year in Burnet County, two people have been bitten by rattlesnakes and now rabies alerts are being raised.

Meadowlakes was the first city in the area to report positive tests for rabies on skunks in the city limits and reports have followed on animals contained in Marble Falls and Burnet.

In 2018 Burnet County has risen already into the 7-10 rabies case category of the Texas Department of State Health Services (TSHS), including skunks, foxes, a raccoon and even a cat in various parts of the county.

The animal in Marble Falls was captured March 22 in the 800 block of Avenue F and in Burnet one was found on John Hoover Parkway March 27. In Meadowlakes they were found in several locations, including Hidden Falls Golf Course.

Charles Nickolous Linzey, 56, of Copperas Cove has received sentences totaling 60 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for the Intoxication Manslaughter of Nancy Parrish of Burnet and a related Intoxication Assault verdict.

A Burnet County jury took little more than an hour to find Linzey guilty and less than that to recommend punishment on March 22. Judge Allan Garrett of the 33rd District Court swiftly pronounced a 50-year sentence on Parrish's death and a separate 10-year sentence for Intoxication Assault of Michael Peyton of Copperas Cove. Peyton was a passenger in Linzey's vehicle when an accident on Oct. 18, 2016 south of Burnet claimed Parrish's life.

Thursday night's snow flurries may have melted away, but there is a 100 percent chance of snow on the corner of Jackson and Pierce Streets from noon-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Burnet Snow Day.

Christmas on the Square, co-sponsored by the City of Burnet and Burnet County, will take place noon-9 p.m. in downtown Burnet ,with live music performances throughout the day and performances by the Burnet High School Highlandettes and Studio 29 Dance Centre.

In addition to the snow, families also can enjoy vendors, food on the square, pictures with Santa on the courthouse steps, a bicycle drawing and the Jingle Bell Jog 5K – a new addition to the even.

Thrill-seekers of all shapes, sizes, and ages will get a chance to participate in the craziest — and muddiest — event in the world, when the Rugged Maniac 5K Obstacle Race (powered by Men’s Health) hits Burnet with 25 adrenaline-pumping obstacles and a day-long party for all racers and spectators on Nov. 4.

This year participants will have the opportunity to conquer 30 events strategically placed throughout the U.S. and Canada. Burnet will host the wild event packed with water slides, trampolines, fire jumps, and much more for the third straight year.

Tickets, available online at ruggedmaniac.com, start at $49 for advance registrants and increase by $10 every two months, ending at $100 on the day of the event.

Students and military personnel with valid identification receive a $10 discount.

World War II naval aviator and retired Presbyterian minister J. Arthur (Art) Strickland was honored with his likeness on the official poster for the 26th anniversary Confederate Air Force Highland Lakes Airsho, held Saturday, Sept. 9, at Burnet Municipal Airport's Kate Craddock Field.

Strickland obtained his private pilot's license while at Schreiner Institute in Kerville and enrolled in the U.S. Navy V-5 program as a naval aviation cadet in November 1942. He attended pre-flight school at the University of Georgia and primary flight training in Millington, Tennessee, prior to being assigned to the Naval Air Station at Pensacola, Florida. On Nov. 30, 1943, he received his wings as a naval aviator and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps Reserves.

In his childhood, Elijah Brown lived in Buchanan Dam and Granite Shoals before attending Marble Falls schools. When his father became pastor of First Baptist Church in Bertram, Brown finished his high school education at Burnet High School, where he graduated in 1999.

“It was a joy to grow up in this area,” said Brown, who currently serves in Washington D.C. as the executive vice president of the 21st Century Wilberforce Initiative, which focuses on international religious freedom.

On July 7, the Baptist World Alliance’s general council at a meeting in Bangkok elected him to serve as the next general secretary.

The Burnet Chamber of Commerce will begin closing off the Historic Downtown Square of Burnet on Thursday evening, April 6.
Kim Winkler, executive director of the Burnet County Chamber of Commerce, expects this to be a spectacular year.
“We sold out of spots for venders extremely fast and we had a lot of new entries for the parade,” said Winkler. “The weather is supposed to be nice, so that should bring a lot of visitors to Burnet. This is going to be a really good year.”
Whether festival goers enjoy rides, games, food, or good, old-fashioned fun, The Mighty Thomas Carnival will be on the corner of Boundary and League streets, open for enjoyment to the public with wristband/family night from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, April 6.

Charges have been expanded to include sexual abuse of a child and burglary against a man arrested in a tense confrontation in Burnet Tuesday, March 28.

In summary, the charges against 55-year-old Danell “Danny” Cude are now aggrivated kidnapping aggrivated sexaul assault and assault of a child and burglary of a hapitation, all state jail felonies and possession of two ounces or less of marijuana.

Burnet police first arrested Cude for sexually assaulting a woman at her apartment while her two small children were inside the home. According to Burnet Police Chief Paul Nelson, Cude allegedly made entry into an apartment in the 800 block of Dixie Drive, where the female victim was alone with her children.

Danny Cude, 55, was arrested for aggravated sexual assault and aggravated kidnapping. According to Burnet Police Chief Paul Nelson, he allegedly made entry into an apartment in the 800 block of Dixie, where the female victim was alone with her kids.

Cude allegedly sexually assaulted the woman multiple times while putting a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her and her children.
