Granite Shoals fire auxiliary receives $300,000, no strings attached

The big news out of the Granite Shoals City Council meeting Tuesday, Feb. 28, was an anonymous donation to the Granite Shoals Fire/ Rescue Auxiliary in the amount of $300,000.

The stated purpose of the volunteer auxiliary is “to provide emotional, financial, practical, and social support to the City of Granite Shoals Fire Department and its members. Most of those members are volunteers themselves. Frequently the fundraising efforts of the auxiliary have supplemented training expenses and equipment needs of the department.

The group has time to plan the best way to use the windfall. Its anonymous donor placed no time limit on the use of the funds and no on restrictions to which of those goals the funds would be applied and they are entirely within the management of the auxiliary, not part of the department's city budget.

Deadline to file for May 6 election is here

The deadline for filings for city and school board elections in Texas is today, Friday, Feb. 17, and, as of Thursday, several contests had developed for the May 6 elections in Burnet County.

The mayors seats in Burnet and Granite Shoals are contested and the Meadowlakes and Highland Haven city councils will be on the ballot.

In cases where none develops, as may be the case in Bertram and Marble Falls, elections will not have to be held.

Marble Falls

In Marble Falls, Mayor John Packer filed for re-election but the other three incumbents, so far, are undeclared. They are Mayor Pro Tem Jane Mare Hurst, Place 2; Rachel Austin-Cook, Place 4 and Rayan Nash, Place 6.

Parks and Recreation Committee Chairman David Rhodes had filed for Place 2 and attorney Megan Klaeger had filed for Place 6.

New banners are ready to announce the coming Granite Shoals 50th Year Bash April 23-24.

The Granite Shoals 50th Year Bash and yet another prospective $500,000 grant were high on the meeting list of topics to discuss for the city council Tuesday, March 22.
“We are 31 days and counting toward the 50th Year Bash,” said City Manager Ken Nickel. “The committee already has 30 arts and crafts booths and eight food booths scheduled and they are looking at a crowd of up to 1,000 people.
“Banners are going up on (Ranch to Market Road) 1431 and we are asking the City of Marble Falls to display one,” Nickel said.
The small staff of the city has been operating in high gear all year preparing documentation for a grant that might offer more than half the cost of a multi-million dollar street restoration project and the proposal for another $500,000 grant for additional expansion to Quarry Park.
