City hits snag on new solid waste contract

The Meadowlakes City Council on Tuesday, Sept. 19, adopted a tax rate and budget and tackled a trash tote problem that challenges the pristine curbside appearance of the city.

Unanimous approval was given for the previously proposed tax rate of $0.315 (or 3.15 cents) per $100 property value. It is comprised of $0.1512 per $100 for the interest and sinking fund (I&S) and $0.1638 for maintenance and operation (M&O).

It will support a budget for the Fiscal Year 2017-2018 of $3,920,055 in expenses in the general, utility and recreation funds and debt service.

Early voting began Monday, April 24, and in Meadowlakes, two places on the ballot are contested.

In their ballot order, Edwin O'Hayre and Mel Hazlewood are candidates for Place 4 and Bobby Brown and Charles Henley are in the running for Place 5.

The City of Meadowlakes has issued a rabies alert as a public health notice.

A skunk that has tested positive for rabies was trapped recently by Meadowlakes Animal Control Officer Robbie Galaway. There was no known contact with the skunk, but it is unknown how long the skunk was located in the Meadowlakes Drive area from which the animal was captured.

"Should a resident find a wild animal acting out of the ordinary do not approach it," said Mayor Mary Ann Raesener. "Please call the Meadowlakes Animal Control, 877-816-8136.

"We encourage our residents to please be conscious when out doors and remember to always vaccinate your pets."

The city also provided the number of Texas Department of State Health Services Zoonosis Control Program 254- 778-6744.
