In a counterpoint to remembrance observances yesterday, Sept. 11, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Steven McCraw issued a statement regarding vigilance to mark the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks:

“On this day 16 years ago, terrorists launched cowardly attacks against our nation on Sept. 11, 2001. Today we honor and remember those who lost their lives as a result of the attack, including valiant first responders. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. The families and friends of those who lost loved ones remain in our thoughts and prayers.

In March, Wayne Douglas Brunet was forced to land his plane at the Llano Municipal Airport by Department of Homeland Security agents. Soon, the 64-year-old may land in federal prison for up to 20 years after pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute between 50 to 100 kilograms of hydroponic marijuana.

Brunet made his plea Wednesday, announced United States Attorney Richard L. Durbin, Jr., and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Special Agent in Charge Shane Folden, San Antonio Division.

A burned body found in the charred remains of a vehicle in Burnet County last June has been identified by the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office as that of a San Antonio man allegedly under investigation for child pornography.

Brian Lee Magee, 52, of San Antonio, died from smoke inhalation and thermal injuries in a manner consistent with suicide, according to a Travis County medical examiner's report obtained by The Highlander.

A passerby found Magee's body not moving and unresponsive in a vehicle filled with smoke in the 3800 block of County Road 202 in Lake Victor in Precinct 2 at around 8 p.m. June 20, 2016. The vehicle initially did not appear damaged by fire, but flashed over, causing it to be engulfed with flames, according to the report.
