If you think it will be only fellas showing poultry, rabbits, cattle, sheep, goats and swine at the 2018 Burnet County Livestock Show this weekend, think again.

On a chilly December morning last week, it was four gals feeding stock out at the Marble Falls High School agriculture education barns and they are ready for the show.

The event will take place Thursday-Saturday, Jan. 4-6, at the Burnet County Fairgrounds, 1208 Houston Clinton Drive in Burnet. And, you may see about as many females as males representing the FFA and 4-H chapters in the county.

It was another record year for the 2017 Burnet County Livestock Show as the sale raised $422,290 for Burnet County Future Farmers of America (FFA) students and 4-H Club members.

This year marked the 50th anniversary of the show, which was held at the Burnet County Fairgrounds in Burnet Jan. 5-7. Last year's show raised $367,240.

Outstanding Senior awards to Cody Moore and Clay Chasteen, while the Robert Jacoby Memorial Top Breeder award went to Cody Moore as well. The Buck Zimmerman Top Hand for 2017 was Audrey Anderson.

An 11-year-old girl from Oatmeal placed in a world champion youth archery tournament in August.

Aspen Nelson, a student at Faith Academy, placed sixth in Junior Buckmasters World Champion Tournament, a worldwide youth archery competition in Montgomery, Ala. after under two years of practicing the sport.

Stepdad Brian Klosterhoff said Nelson is a natural.

“She's ranked in the state of Texas for first place junior archer in 4-H,” he said.

Klosterhoff and friend Robert Lee began coaching a group of Burnet County 4-H students in archery in April 2015, when Nelson expressed interest in the sport.

“She wanted to do it and she has really taken off,” he said.

Nelson said she likes archery because “it's very challenging and you get to be outside. With archery, you have a hobby forever.”
