Republican leader, Highlander columnist Dorothy Crockett dies

Horseshoe Bay Mayor Steve Jordan declared Nov. 14, 2017 “Dorothy Crockett Day” at the Star Republican Women's special tribute to the long-time Republican, who helped found the Texas Federation of Women as well as SRW. The mayor's declaration was met with a standing ovation by more than 140 who attended the special event.

The name Dorothy Crockett became synonymous with Horseshoe Bay, thanks in large part to her tireless chronicles of the comings and goings of local residents through her weekly “Horseshoe Bay Happenings” column in The Highlander.

STAR Republican Women honor Dorothy Crockett

For many years, Horseshoe Bay resident Dorothy Crockett has chronicled the comings and goings of her neighbors as part of her "Horseshoe Bay Happenings" column for The Highlander every Friday.

What many people may not realize, however, is Crockett helped found the Texas Federation of Republican Women in 1955 as well as the predecessor club to the Star Republican Women of Llano County in 1975.

Star Republican Women to host education advocates at meeting

Ken Mercer, Texas Board of Education member, and Alice Linahan, education advocate, are scheduled to speak at the upcoming Star Republican Women meeting on Tuesday, April 19, at Quail Point Lodge in Horseshoe Bay.

A complimentary luncheon will be served at 12:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 1 p.m.

Mercer was elected to the State Board of Education (District 5) in 2006 and re-elected in 2010 and 2012. He is seeking re-election this year.

“Mercer has been known for his conservative views regarding the formulation of state standards in science and history,” said Mary Lou Kromer, president of the Star Republican Women.
